In 2017, the director of the Pregnancy Center of Central Virginia asked how they could obtain an expensive, but very needed ultrasound unit for the Orange Center. Studies have shown that the ability to show an expectant mother her child’s heartbeat earlier in her pregnancy increased the chance that the baby would be carried to full term. Knights of Columbus Council 13860 began a team effort between the other Knights councils in the area, the Pregnancy Center, and other Christian-based Churches in the area to raise the $22,000 needed to buy the unit. As part of that strategy, we solicited a matching funds program within the larger Knights of Columbus organization. If we were successful in raising $11,000, than the KOC would donate the other half.
Fundraising began in earnest at the Pregnancy Center Barbecue fundraiser and continued with requests for support from other KOC councils, and generous donations from St Isidore donors and other Churches. One of the largest donations was allowed through the selfless gift of love provided by the Jesse Evans family in the quilt raffle.
Through all these efforts, we were so successful that we were able to raise a total of $68,000. That amount included the matching funds from KOC Supreme for about $26,000. With that total, we were not only able to procure a ultrasound unit for the Orange Center, but also replace an outdated model at the Culpeper center and have funds left for hospital grade disinfectant units. These units are vital and allow the use of a smaller probe earlier in a women’s pregnancy, as early as six weeks. At that point, the baby has developed to the size of a pea, but that little pea has a heartbeat and is one of God’s greatest gifts. Upon the ability to hear the heartbeat, minds and hearts can be changed. What the pregnancy centers do supports a women’s right to make her own decision, in the hope and Prayer that it will be to carry the baby to full term.
The two units have already been delivered and the official ribbon cutting ceremonies are August 25 in Orange and September 8 in Culpeper. Thank you and God Bless all who have supported this wonderful ministry. Through your gifts, more babies will be carried to full term and have the same chance we did to follow Gods will.
